The Antica Locanda della via Francigena is ideally placed for exploring the fascinating Tuscia region, with its spas, its historic towns and villages, its priceless art and architecture, its archaeological sites and all the natural beauties of its countryside, lakes and seaside.
The Hotel has a large restaurant and meeting room and two lawns where guests can relax or enjoy one of our specially prepared aperitifs.

Below are just some suggestions on places to visit near the hotel.
Viterbo – A Spa Town:
The medieval San Pellegrino district, the Pope‘s Palace, the churches and the fountains are just some of the things to see in Viterbo.
Excellent shopping facilities in the town centre or the modern shopping centres in the suburbs.
Modern, well-equipped spa Terme dei Papi just 8 km from the hotel (discounts for guests).
Vico Lake: 8 Km.
Set in a steep, wooded, volcanic crater, the sparkling waters of Vico Lake reflect the peaks of Monte Fogliano and Monte Venere.
Much of the area around the lake is a nature reserve and its waters are completely uncontaminated, with no motorboats allowed.
Swimming on a summer day in this breath-taking scenario is definitely a unique pleasure; kyaks and canoes can be rented by the hour.
Horse riding and quad biking are both catered for and there are many pleasant walks.
Villas and Castles:
Villa Lante in Bagnaia, Palazzo Farnese in Caprarola and the “Monster Park” in Bomarzo are
three Renaissance jewels, a feast of gardens, fountains, frescoes and sculptures.
Then there are a host of other castles and palazzos built by the powerful nobles and princes of the church through the ages: The Orsinis at Soriano nel Cimino and Vasanello, the Marescotti-Ruspoli family at Vignanello, the Monaldeschi family in Bolsena, the Farnese family in Caprarola, Gradoli and Valentano, the Borgias in Civitacastellana and Nepi, the Odescalchis in Bassano Romano, the Albornoz in Viterbo, the Santacroce-Altieri family at Oriolo Romano.
Well worth a visit are also the “Rocca dei Papi” at Montefiascone and the Abbadia castle in Vulci.
Palazzo Doria Pamphilij: in the purpose-built village of San Martino al Cimino, the brain child of the extremely energetic Donna Olimpia Maidalchini Pamphilij, sister-in-law to Pope Innocent X.
Donna Olimpia incorporated a Romanesque portal from the ex-monastery when she built her palazzo, which was completely renovated in 1652 by various architects, including Bernini.
Today it has been turned into a very stylish conference centre, with its original carved wooden ceilings, frescoes and a huge fireplace.

Bolsena Lake:
The largest volcanic lake in Italy, 114 km² and 151 m deep.
There are 2 small islands, Martana and Bisentina.
Motorboats are allowed on Bolsena.
Archeaology:
The most important local site is undoubtedly Tarquinia with its Etruscan necropolis and famous frescoed tombs showing scenes from the lives of the people buried there: hunting, dancing, banquets, games, animals, demons and much more, some going back to the 6th century BC.
There is also an excellent museum in a superb medieval palazzo.
Tuscania is also well worth a vist to see its Curunas sarcophagi (4th-2nd century BC), as is Vulci with its bronzes.
The cliffside necropoli hacked out of the tufa rock of Blera, Barbarano Romano, Norchia and Castel d'Asso can all be visited, but they are rather overgrown and care should be taken.
There is a marvellous Roman theatre at Ferento, near Viterbo, and the site of Faleri Novii, near Fabrica di Roma, with its ancient walls delineating a town destroyed and abandoned in medieval times.
Another fascinating site is the Roman amphitheatre, cave church and cliff tombs at Sutri, 10 kms along the main Cassia road from our hotel.

Sport:
Also at Sutri is the renowned golf course, the Golf Club le Querce, which is an Italian technical federal centre.
There are several mountain bike excursion tours around the hotel itself.
At Cinelli, roughly 7 km away, there are two artificial fishing lakes.
We will be only too pleased to make other suggestions to guests who want to explore the exciting Tuscia Viterbese area.
