Lugo di Romagna is a lively town near Ravenna, where is expressed the popular culture of Romagna Region, always ready to hospitality typical of this region of north-east of Italy.
Lugo town centre has in interesting variety of architectural styles from various periods of its history along the centuries.
The symbol of the town is the stronghold Rocca Estense (now the town hall headquarters).
In front of the Rocca, there is the monumental quadriporticus known as Pavaglione, built between 1771 and 1783 to house the thriving silk worms market.
Today the building hosts a six century old market and is the setting for cultural events and shows.
Nearby lies the Monument to Francesco Baracca (1936), hero of the Italian air force during the First World War; the homonymous museum is just a short walk away.
It houses Baracca's Spad VII airplane with his coat of arms representing a rampant horse, which has inspired the symbol of Ferrari's sport cars.
Faenza, the town of majolica
Of Roman origins, Faenza is a splendid city of art whose fame already shone in the Renaissance period of the production of exquisitely made pottery that was exported all over Europe.
The name, coming from the Romans who developed this center under the name of Faventia, has become synonymous with ceramics (majolica) in various languages, including French (faïence) and English (faience).
Faenza's architectural attractions are concentrated in the two contiguous main squares: Piazza del Popolo, lined by two double order porticoed wings, and Piazza della Libertà.This town is home to the International Museum of Ceramics houses pieces from all over the world and from every epoch, from classical amphoras to the works of Chagall and Picasso, and there is a rich section dedicated to Faenza pottery in the golden age of the Renaissance.
In September and October international contemporary and classical ceramic art events draw majolica amateurs, collectors and artists to Faenza from all over the world.
In June the Palio del Niballo, a tournament between five horsemen from the districts of the town, re-evokes the magnificence and struggles of Faenza in the Manfredi epoch.
Typical regional dishes include home-made tagliatelle, cappelletti, lasagna and strozzapreti with the rich Romagnol meat sauce.
Cotignola...
The most important buildings of the town are the Tower of John Hawkwood and Palazzo Sforza; both were completely destroyed and later accurately rebuilt according to their original features.
The former is the symbol of the town and still houses the original bell that survived the 1944 German bombings; the latter was the palace of the Sforza family during their rule over the town.
In 1892 Palazzo Sforza was officially declared “National artistic and historical monument”; it was rebuilt in 1961 and some original fragments were incorporated into the new building, such as the beautiful terracotta coat of arms of the Sforza, the pillars of the arcade and the Roman stone of Caio Vario (A.D.
30 - 49).
It houses the town museum Museo Varoli and the archive.
Casa Varoli is the museum-house of the local artist Luigi Varoli (1889 - 1958).

Ravenna, UNESCO World Heritage...
Ravenna is a treasure chest of art, history and culture of the highest order, a city with ancient origins and a glorious past and capital three times, of the Western Roman Empire, of King Theodoric of the Goths and of the Byzantine Empire in Europe.
The history of the imperial city has been written in the monuments, Cathedrals and precious mosaics which have embellished Ravenna from the first period of the dominion of ancient Rome.
The basilicas and baptisteries of the city contain the richest heritage of mosaics dating from the 5th and 6th centuries and eight historic buildings included in the World Heritage List of UNESCO, like San Vitale, Galla Placidia, SantApollinnare, Sant'Apollinare Nuovo Battistero degli Ariani.
Just a short distance from the sea, Ravenna also offers nine seaside resort areas along its 35 kilometres of coast for a wide variety of holidays and stays.
The organisation of services is efficient and dynamic, and the choice of holiday is as wide as ever: sunshine and relaxation, games, sports and fitness, excursions and parks, including Mirabilandia theme park.
