Vico Equense and around...
Arola:
Arola extends across a vast territory that also has a beach area on the Positano side.
The local economy is based on agriculture and the transformation of typical dairy products, including Provolone del Monaco, and in the last few decades also tourism.
Following the road down from Arola and along Via dei Camaldoli we reach the Astapiana hill and the XVIII century Camaldolesi monastery from where the view over the Sorrento Coast becomes spectacular, reaching from Meta to the end of the coast at Punta Campanella.
Vico Equense:
Continuing downwards we come to Vico Equense, the first town on the Sorrento Coast.
In this smiling town, nature seems to have concentrated most of its best qualities - the sea, the hills and mountains, combined with the tradition of hospitality innate to its inhabitants.
A town with a very long history, rich in numerous archaeological findings from the Greek, Etruscan and Italic eras, a collection numbering over 700 on display at the Antiquarium Equano.
Also worth a visit for its scientific importance is the Campania Mineralogical Museum with around 3500 exhibits of minerals, 1400 of which are from all around the world.
In the town centre is the Mediaeval Castle built in 1284, and the Church of the Annunziata dating back to the XIV century and - built on a limestone cliff overlooking the sea and towards Marina di Equa and the Sorrento Coast – is an example of Gothic architecture with priceless paintings and numerous sepulchres.
The Church of the Arciconfraternita dell'Assunta, with its beautiful 18th century wooden altar covered in tiny pearls and coral, should also be visited along with the recently restored Giusso Castle.
Vico Equense is also a well-known spa centre for its Scrajo sulphur springs where the spa famous since Roman times is located at sea level.

Not to be missed are the nature excursions along the many trails of Monte Faito, alternating these with tennis, swimming or volleyball at Faito‘s sports centre.
The renowned cuisine:
Vico Equense also owes its fame to gastronomy - from the famous Pizza al Metro, sausage and salami made from pork and orange rind, and the magnificent dairy products including ’burrini‘ - caciottine cheese filled with a delicate butter purée, ’caprignetti‘ – small balls of creamy goat‘s milk cheese dipped in aromatic herbs and then preserved in olive oil.
The most well-known product is Provolone del Monaco PDO, a mature pulled-curd cheese in a characteristic long melon shape or pear-shaped.
All these products typical of the area are still produced in the traditional manner, and there are many delicatessens and producers where not only can you taste the local products but also watch how they are made.

Excursions:
Sorrento:
The land of myth, legends and tradition that has always enchanted its visitors, forcing them to come back.
Now it is a modern town mainly dedicated to tourism, and the home to international events such as the Sorrento Summer Music calendar or International Cinema Festival and has always been the ideal departure point for all the "must see" tourist spots in the surrounding area (Capri, Ischia, Naples, Herculaneum, Pompeii, Positano and Amalfi).
Among the many monuments worth seeing are Piazza Tasso (the bustling heart of the town), the Basilica of Sant‘Antonino, the public gardens, the Cloister of Saint Francis, the Cathedral, the old town walls, the Valley of the Mills and the Correale Museum – which holds important memories of both the town‘s history and of its pure traditional craft of inlaid woodwork
Positano:
Located in a valley on one of the most beautiful stretches of the Amalfi Coast.
From its origins as a village with homes built into the rock and dedicated to rock pool fishing, it is now one of the most famous elite tourist resorts in Italy.
Renowned for its fashion, created by local designers and sold in typical small boutiques.
These can be visited by wandering up and down the characteristic alleyways.
The coast road passes above the village, so the Amalfi Coast excursion makes a panoramic pause at the Belvedere, to enjoy one of the most beautiful views of the world.
Amalfi Drive:
They say that the "Amalfi Drive” is one of the most spectacular drives in Europe for the incomparable natural scenarios it offers en route before reaching Amalfi itself.
Amalfi is one of the old marine republics, and welcomes its visitors by leaving them spellbound by the majesty of the Cathedral, dedicated to Saint Andrew (IX century), its splendid decorated façade and a XIX century mosaic in the tympanum.
A visit to the old Arsenal is also recommended, where the great galleys of the fleet were built.
Capri:
An island famed throughout the world for its sheer excellence.
Most of its coast is almost inaccessible, dotted with many grottoes, including the famous “Blue Grotto”.
With a flourishing vegetation and a fantastic blue sea it enchants visitors with its sweet, mild climate, tempting them along the many paths that cross the island, or to take boat trips to visit the Faraglioni Rocks or the Blue Grotto, to relax - carefree - over an ice cream or coffee at the tables around the legendary ’Piazzetta‘.
A wander along Via Camerelle, Capri‘s fashion street, bumping into the rich and famous that have chosen Capri as their holiday destination.
NAPLES:
Light and Shadow, the two words that best describe Naples.
Its light reflected as we admire its many natural, artistic and architectural beauties, and the shadow representing those that attempt to criticise and disfigure this incredible city.
A visit to Castel dell‘Ovo, remain speechless before the beauty of the Veiled Christ in the chapel of San Severo, wander along the Decumani, become inebriated by a thousand aromas, endless pizzerias and restaurants, and leave thrilled by the warmth and fun-loving nature of the Neapolitans.
POMPEI:
A town of art and religion, home to one of the largest archaeological sites in the world which attracts millions of visitors every year, is like diving into the past and reliving the period around 79AD, before Vesuvius buried everything with ash and pumice.
The splendid Basilica dedicated to the Madonna, a place of worship that acts as a magnet to endless pilgrimages, has to be visited.

Nature trails:
Monte Faito can be reached by car, after which there are several nature trails that differ in terms of duration and degree of difficulty.
Organised by the Legambiente Association in Vico Equense, one of the simplest and less tiring is “Il Gheppio”.
Along the various trails it is easy to spot birds such as kestrels and buzzards, and come into contact with flora that exists only on this peninsula, such as santolina naepolitana (Aster genus) and the carnivorous pinguicula.
S.MARIA DEL CASTELLO/ POSITANO...
The trail begins from Santa Maria del Castello, a village that straddles the mountain between the Gulf of Naples and Gulf of Salerno, and follows a path of high-level interest in natural and panoramic terms, reaching Montepertuso in a little over two hours.
The landscape is characterised by stretches of woodland and rock as far as the forest rangers‘ centre.
Along the trail you can admire typical Mediterranean flora such as juniper, myrtle, cistus, valeriana, asperula, helichrysum, hypericum, rosemary, thistle, yews, downy oak, alder, common hornbeam and carob.
The panorama from the trail is breathtakingly incredible, taking in Positano from on high with Montepertuso and Nocelle to the left and Vettica Maggiore in the distance.
From Montepertuso, along the alleys that link to the town we reach Positano.
THE ALPS OF THE SORRENTINE PENINSULA...
Length 6 km; Duration 4-5 hours
The excursion begins in Santa Maria del Castello, in the hills above Vico Equense and overlooking the Gulf of Salerno.
En route the trail offers a splendid view of Positano and Praiano on the southern side.
The trail reaches a height of 900 metres above sea level, and during a pause on the way up you can see the limestone mass of Monte Faito, and the peaks of Monte San Michele and Monte Mezzo (“Molar and Canine”) After about an hour the trail offers a sensational panorama of Positano.
Further along, one glance from the Peak of Monte Comune takes in Vesuvius, the Gulf of Salerno and Capri.
THE HIGH ROAD...
Length 8km; Duration 5-6 hours
The trail begins from Piazza Capasso in Bomerano (Agerola), and the features of the coast gradually come into view: sheer drops alternate with gorges flourishing in vegetation.
Even after just a few kilometres the view spans as far as Capri, and continuing west the trail offers a marvellous scenario of the coast from Praiano to Capri.
Against the backdrop of blue skies and sheer cliffs you can watch the flight of birds of prey, and crossing naturalist oases we reach Santa Maria del Castello.
THE CAMALDOLI...
Length 6 km; Duration 4-5 hours
The trail begins from the square in Montechiaro (Vico Equense), and the first view offered is of the plain of Sorrento.
Continuing, on the left the view opens up to take in Vesuvius and the town of Vico Equense.
The trail leads to Camaldoli, the most important stop on the itinerary: a magnificent panorama from the Gulf of Naples to the sea of Salerno, whilst below us we can see all the towns of Meta, Piano and Sant'Agnello.
