Scilla is a small seaside resort placed on the Messina Strait, 22 north km from Reggio Calabria.
The origins of Scilla are certainly really ancient, confused among mythology, history and legend, Scilla distinguishes for its magnificent panoramas, for the Castle of the Ruffo, for the beach and for the district of Chianalea and it is today one of the most famous Calabrian tourist destinations.
Climbing on some hills, it stretches out on the sea of the Messina Strait, forming two splendid natural inlets that develop on both the sides of the castle giving life to the two districts of Marina Grande, with the beach, and Chianalea.
The inhabited center, characteristic, develops itself partly around and above the Castle, partly on a plain that raises about 70 meters on the level of the sea.
Marina Grande
Delimited to south and north by two imposing block of rock and separated by the center by a bluff to precipice, Marina Grande is the zone of the beach, one of the most beautiful of the the Calabrian coasts.
Chianalea
Chianalea is also acoastal zone situated on the northern slope of the bluff where is situated the Castle that divides this district from Marina Grande.
Otherwise from Marina Grande, Chianalea offers only few meters of beach, being almost all of its coast constituted by rock-cliffs and rocks.

San Giorgio is the inhabited center of the country, situated to around 70 meters from the level of the sea.

The Castle of the Ruffo
The Castle of Scilla is certainly one of the most greater tourist attractions in Scilla and the whole Calabria.
Castled on a tall granite cliff around 80 meters and all stretched out toward the sea, it dominates the two bays of Marina Grande and Chianalea and is identified as the symbol of the country by now.
Imposing and well preserved the castle fascinates for its history, for the extraordinary beauty of its insides and for the tangled secret, recently restored.
Once residence of the Ruffo family, the rooms of the castle are destined today to cultural purposes.
